Winter (and the last part of autumn) in Valtellina is by far the most excellent season for skiing and for all the sports linked to snow, even if in fact snow is never absent in the valley not even in summer and several winter sports can be practiced even in summer. Really and truly here, one can practice many sports: downhill skiing, the skiing district contains in fact more than 400km of tracks, for a total of 135 ski lifts, layouts for the Nordic skiing and routes for the off-track skiing. Numerous also are the slopes endowed with programmed snowing, the snowboarding, the telemarking, the cross country skiing, walks with ski shoes, rides in motor sleighs, ice skating and many others (see in sport). During the same period of the year one can visit the uncontaminated valleys, little known to the tourist, where silence reigns supreme and invites to calmness, the snow creates a breath-taking landscape and gently enfolds a nature which seems resting, waiting for spring, donating the excitement of a vision which captures you for its uniqueness. Above all, during this period the panoramic ride on the Bernina Express train of Bernina, the highest in Europe, is exceptional for the spectactularity: in many stages the train is lost in whitened woods to emerge from real tunnels formed by the snow, the Retica railways joins Tirano to St. Moritz going up to over the height of 2000 metres across charming landscapes, a trip which in itself is already a holiday!
