Valtellina and its Churces

If you are programming a holiday with the aim of discovering Valtellina, keeping in mind your religious interests, this paragraph will open all the doors for you. You will find in it all the indications and the information which will enable you to create with great facility a trip “made to measure”:

(one of our operators will welcome you upon arrival; he will coordinate your trip and will be at your disposal on site to enable you to spend a pleasant stay).

Art, religion, history, culture, traditions of the whole Alpine area are witnessed in the “Terziere Superiore” and also by the thousand churches, basilicas and “xenodochi” spread all over the territory.
The most important religious monument is the Basilica of Our Lady of Tirano, built after the apparition of the Blessed Virgin to the Blessed Mario Omodei in the XVI century; on the overlooking hill is the Xenodochio of Saint Perpetua, which used to accommodate and feed the pilgrims and which hosts frescoes dating from the 11th /16th century of an inestimable value; in the historic centre of Tirano is the Collegiate of Saint Martin with its beautiful Lombardi Romanic bell tower (XV-XIV century); another religious building which is one of the most significant in the valley is the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie at Grosotto even for the significance that the population had wanted to assign to it during the Grigioni siege; not far away at  Grosio is the house of Cipriano Valorsa, an important artist who, for his typical religious paintings, was defined as the “Devout Painter” and, always in the same village are the Church of Saint George Church (XIII century) with its Romanic style bell tower, the parochial church of Saint Joseph, the bell tower of Saint Faustino, which fosters the burial tombs of Saint Faustino and Saint Giovita. At Villa di Tirano are the Collegiate of Saint Lawrence with its original Romanic 15th century bell tower and the Church of Saint Anthony Church, an eighteenth century jewel; at Bianzone one finds the Church of Saint Siro of a probable Longobard origin (XII century); at Aprica one finds the Xenodochio of Saint Peter, which used to accommodate and feed the pilgrims; found in Teglio are the Church of Saint Martin not hiding its medieval origins and isolated on the splendid promontory, the small church of Saint Peter (XI century)  and the churches of Saint Stephen (XV century) and Saint Anthony (XVII century); at Mazzo di Valtellina the Baptistery of Saint John the Baptist and the Church of Our Lady; at Vervio is the parochial church of Saint Ilario, dating back to the fourteenth century, refurbished in various periods and others still, all bearing witness of the rich past full of agitated religious and historic events, where the meeting and the ease with which transit took place through the passes of Bernina, Aprica and the one at Mortirolo favoured the commercial and cultural-religious exchanges and at the same time changed Valtellina in a land of conquest and wars in varied historical periods.
